Mount Fitz Roy or Chaltén (smoking mountain) in Tehuelche language, is a mountain of 3,405 m.a.s.l., which is located east of the southern Patagonian ice field, on the border of Chile and Argentina in Patagonia.
The origin of its name, El Chaltén, means "mountain that smokes". For the ancient inhabitants, it was considered a volcano rather than a hill, as the clouds are constantly perched on its summit. It is also known as Fitz Roy, since it was named after the capital of the HMS Beagle Robert Fitz Roy.
